Here is my match report from the England game last night:

Internationals resumed this week and England’s latest qualifier was against Moldova at Wembley, where they emerged victorious with a 4-0 win courtesy of goals from Steven Gerrard, Danny Welbeck (2) and Rickie Lambert. There was a host of injuries in the squad, so that meant that Rickie Lambert was once again called upon and got his first start in an England Shirt. Spurs’ Kyle Walker was also drafted in at Right-back as Glen Johnson was out injured.

As expected England were on top for the opening stages and in the 11th minute, they made the breakthrough. Frank Lampard found space outside the box and cut it back to Steven Gerrard, who drove a shot to into the bottom corner, leaving Namasco with no chance. Jack Wilshere very nearly extended that lead in the 24th minute, he drove through the middle of the Moldova defence, but his right-footed shot was beaten away by Namasco. The Moldova keeper was called into action shortly after, pulling off two sives to deny Lampard and Walcott respectively, unfortunately Walcott’s shot was too powerful and it fell to Lambert to head home his 2nd goal for his country.

On the stroke of half-time, Danny Welbeck got on the scoresheet, he latched on to a superb pass from Lambert, took it past the keeper and tapped the ball into the net to complete a relatively straight-forward game for England, where they were comfortable throughout, as you would expect.

HT England 3-0 Moldova

England came back out in similar fashion to how the ended the first and the combination that provided the 3rd goal, was exactly the same. Rickie Lambert threaded through a lovely pass for Welbeck to run onto and dink over the onrushing Namasco, taking England’s goal tally to four. Almost immediately after, Lambert was at it again, executing a flick into the path of Baines, who was denied by Namasco.

Just after the hour mark, Welbeck went close to getting a hat-trick but his header looped over the bar. The visitors barely created anything and one of their rare chances arrived in the 66th minute, though Dedov’s effort was never going to trouble Joe Hart. Ross Barkley had previously been brought on for his England Debut and was inches away from marking the occasion with a goal. He found space outside the box and dragged his shot narrowly wide past the post. Danny Welbeck had another chance to earn that third goal, but Namasco was equal to it. Namasco’s busy night continued, this time, he produced an unorthodox save to keep out Lampard’s effort.

Kyle Walker was next to have a shot on goal, he hit it with venom, but it flew over the cross-bar, much to Moldova’s relief. James Milner had what appeared to be the final chance of the game, but spurned it over the bar. And 4-0 is how it finished.

FT England 4-0 Moldova.
