Here’s my season preview on League 1 side Oldham Athletic, I look at the players who have departed, the players brought in and where I think they will finish!

Lowdown: Oldham have always being hanging around the relegation zone in League 1, but have been simply too good to go down, yet too poor to push for the play-offs. Last season wasn’t the most successful of campaign’s, finishing in 16th position, 6 places away from relegation to League 2 and 9 points above Chesterfield, the highest placed side to go down.

Many players have departed Boundary Park in the summer window, with Reuben Reid, Shefki Kuqi, Kieron Lee, Zander Diamond, Keanu Marsh-Brown, Filipe Morais, Chris Taylor, Paul Black and Josh Parker amongst the big stars to pursue different challenges. Latics have brought their fair share of replacements in though, as experienced full-back Jonathan Grounds arrived from Middlesbrough, young striker Daniel Taylor, who was released by Newcastle, veteran midfielder Lee Croft has been signed on loan from Derby, Connor Brown from Sheffield United and completing the transfers is former Scunthorpe defender Cliff Byrne.

Cliff Byrne the latest addition to Oldham Athletic

Realistically, I expect a similar season like last year, a on and off campaign, ending on a high, there are many bright youngster in the ranks and I think they deserve a chance, because what Latics need is a bit of fresh, fearless players, who want to play attacking minded football. What they do need is a top goalscorer, who can finish when the ball is on a plate, Kuqi tried his best and now we need a typical fox in the box, Charlton striker Leon Clarke is a target, although bids have already been turned down from the Addicks. An improvement on last season is needed, so a mid-table finish would be satisfying.

Manager: Paul Dickov
